Protestors gather as diggers move in for work on Ramelton comms mast

A GROUP of protestors have gathered at the site of a new telecommunications mast on the outskirts of Ramelton.

There has been widespread anger in the area since a 2019 decision to grant planning permission for a 30-metre high mast at Drumonaghan Woods.

The Ramelton Mast Action Group has said they feared the structure would have a huge environmental impact.

This morning, diggers moved into the site, but a group of protestors, among them veteran Donegal County Councillor Ian McGarvey, have gathered.

They insist they are not for moving.

Two years ago, a petition containing 400 signatories was presented to Donegal County Council.

The Ramelton Mast Action Group said they were ‘let down’ at the time and said they were ‘shocked’ at the granting of the planning permission.

The application was made by Cignal.

The proposed mast is to cover a wide area in the Milford area, including Drumonaghan Woods, Kilmarcrennan Road, and close to Ramelton Town.

It has also been reported that the telecoms unit will carry 10 radio antennas to provide additional facilities.
