A Donegal County Councillor has called for urgent support for frontline workers as they seek recognition for their sacrifices during Covid-19.
Cllr Gerry McMonagle said a gesture should be made soon to applaud all frontline workers for their work over the past 18 months.
He accused the government of dragging its heels on its promises.
Speaking in council last week, Cllr McMonagle called for support for the call made to HSE and Government by the National Joint Council of Health Sector Trade Unions.
Cllr McMonagle claimed the Taoiseach’s remarks were ‘flippant’ and ‘populist’ when he said workers will be recognised in the future.
“The government is dragging their feet, talking about 10 days holidays. That’s not what frontline workers deserve, they deserve a full appreciation,” Cllr McMonagle said.
“Many healthcare workers succumbed to the virus and sadly passed away, we need to recognise that and we need to recognise it quickly.”
Donegal County Council is set to write to the Taoiseach, Tanaiste and the HSE on the matter.
