A Ballybofey woman has been given a suspended jail sentence after being caught with €3,500 worth of cocaine at her home.

Violet O’Brien appeared at Letterkenny District Court charged with possession of the drug and also having the drug for sale and supply.

Gardai raided Ms O’Brien’s home at Glenpatrick Park, Donegal Road in Ballybofey on November 20th last year where they found the drugs.

Solicitor for Ms O’Brien, Mr Frank Dorrian said that at the time the accused was undergoing a very difficult period in her life.

He said her husband was dying and that her son was missing and that she was dependant on the drug she was found in possession of.

Mr Dorrian said that his client is now drug-free and not involved in any other illegal activity.

Judge Raymond Finnegan said this was a very serious charge and noted the amount of drugs was worth €3,500.

He sentenced Ms O’Brien to four months in prison but suspended the sentence for 18 months.
