Another 4,799 cases of Covid have bene confirmed today.

A total of 467 people are now in hospital, a worry rise of 31 patients since yesterday.

A total of 104 of these people are in intensive care.

It comes as Tanaiste Leo Varadkar warns of possible record numbers of the virus hitting Ireland in the coming days.

Today is the first day of the new restrictions with pubs, restaurants and cinemas closing their doors at 8pm to avoid a spread of the virus.

In Northern Ireland, 2,148 positive cases and one additional death have been reported in the past 24 hours.

The Tanaiste added that the combination of the booster programme, along with mask-wearing and reducing social contacts will be enough “to weather the Omicron wave”.

Ireland’s “world-beating vaccine programme” is the most significant thing we can do, along with individual actions, he said.
