There is widespread sadness in Letterkenny and beyond following the death yesterday of Hughlie Kelly.

Mr Kelly, aged 82, of Beechwood, was a well-known figure in the Cathedral Town.

A staunch member of St Eunan’s GAA Club as a player and a a coach, Mr Kelly had a hand in many of the club’s county titles at many age levels.

A much respected and well-liked member of the Community, Hughie was often seen enjoying a cuppa at Mac’s Mace on the High Road in his latter years.

He is survived by his wife Brigid (nee McDaid) and the couple’s children including sons Brian, Paddy, Michael (Cliffy), Kieran and daughters Mary and Cathy.

He is predeceased by his brothers James, Mickey and Charlie and by his late sister Anne.

St Eunan’s GAA Club posted a tribute to the late Mr Kelly on their Facebook page last night.

It read “St Eunan’s GAA club is deeply saddened this evening with the news of the sad passing of Hughie Kelly, Beechwood, Letterkenny. Hughie, an avid St Eunan’s supporter and member of the 1956 St Eunan’s County Championship winning squad, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family early this evening.

“Hughie loved people and people loved Hughie. We will miss you. Sincere condolences with all the Kelly family at this sad time.”
