Oliver Doherty & Eugene Gillespie were yesterday confirmed as this year’s Owen McDaid “Roe” Mini Bus & Taxi Hire Winter League Champions at Buncrana Golf Club.
Oliver and Eugene defeated Jonny Morrison & Damien Doherty 2&1 in an epic final on Sunday morning. It turned out to be a fantastic game of golf with nothing between the pairings going to the 9th hole.
However, Jonny Morrison sank a fantastic 30ft putt on the 9th green to give himself and Damien a 1 shot lead going into the back 9. That lead was short lived in the back 9 as Oliver & Eugene fought straight back, drawing level on the very next hole (10th) with another birdie.
They then won the 12th hole to go 1up but Jonny & Damien rallied back and won the 14th to level the match again. With the match all level after 15 holes Oliver & Eugene then took the game by the scruff of the neck and closed out a great victory by winning the 16th (to go 1up) and 17th to take the title 2&1.
18 Hole Open Stableford Sweep Results
There was a good turn out for the Open Stableford last weekend and with some extremely difficult pin positions scoring was never going to be easy.
The best score of the weekend was returned by Shaun Duffy (36) who played some good golf to shot 38pts. This was Shaun’s maiden victory and if Shaun continues playing to this standard he should see his handicap come tumbling down over the coming months.
