CAO Countdown @LYIT: Ellen’s Student Story

LYIT’s Department of Civil Engineering & Construction offers a wide range of courses covering the broad built environment spectrum of disciplines including: Civil Engineering; Fire Safety Engineering; Architectural Technology; Quantity Surveying; and Construction Management.

Ellen Kemp is a fourth-year student in the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Quantity Surveying at LYIT. She most recently spent a full year out on a paid work placement, which is an embedded feature of the Quantity Surveying programmes at LYIT. Ellen outlined, “What I have been enjoying most about Quantity Surveying at LYIT is the work experience. It gives you an insight into what the job is like when you graduate, there are so many job opportunities when you graduate, both at home and abroad.”

Recognising the importance of having both nationally and internationally recognised qualifications of a verified standard, the Department seeks professional accreditation for all degree programmes. The Department takes a lead in developing emerging legislative targets such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), Lean Construction, nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) and Passive House Construction.

Ellen further added, “I am currently focused on my dissertation, this year in the fourth and final year of my degree, I am covering modules such as financial management, a law module and a measurement module, I really like the financial management side of things.”

Ellen is excited about her future and with plenty of employment opportunities both at home and abroad, a world of opportunities await Ellen when she graduates in 2023.

LYIT’s Department of Civil Engineering & Construction offers 7 CAO programmes. To find out more about the Department of Civil & Engineering CAO programmes available at LYIT visit: https://www.lyit.ie/Study-at-LYIT/Find-a-course/?lvl=100
