LYIT launch New Entrant Sport Scholarships for 2022/23

Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) has this week launched the New Entrant Scholarship Applications for 2022/23. 

This scholarship is designed to support talented athletes on their journey combining a top-class third level education and the highest standards of performance in their chosen sport(s). Applications are considered on a case-by-case basis in all sports including individual athletes who demonstrate an ability to compete at Junior or Senior International level.

LYIT provided 52 New Entrant Sports Scholarships in 2021/22 across a variety of sports, including GAA, Soccer, Basketball, Athletics and Karate.

The Institute has had tremendous success in sport in recent years and continues to grow year on year, competing, and reaching the latter stage of the Sigerson Cup in Gaelic Football and Fresher Gaelic Football League winners. The LYIT Men’s and Ladies Soccer teams are competing in the Premier Division of Higher Education Soccer and the Basketball sides continue to grow and compete at the intervarsity weekend annually. LYIT have also been represented at intervarsity level by successful athletes and boxers in addition to many more sports.

LYIT Head of Sport Michael Murphy says: “Our LYIT Sports Scholarship programme continues to support students on their journey to academic and sporting excellence. In the current academic year 52 New Entrant Sports Scholarships were awarded to students and we look forward to supporting this growth again for 2022/23. We are excited by the big steps that sport at LYIT has taken in recent years, and we are motivated to continue these developments into the future. 

There are a range of supports provided for those successful in obtaining a New Entrant Sports Scholarship at LYIT. Students avail of a financial contribution of up to €1,500, free membership of the LYIT Fitness Suite and High-Performance Gym as well as educational workshops and academic and sports mentoring. Students also get the opportunity to participate in strength & conditioning programmes, physiotherapy and injury rehabilitation and coaching support as they compete at the highest level in Intervarsity/College sport. Career Guidance Support is available to ensure that students make the most of the opportunities afforded to LYIT graduates. 

LYIT’s New Entrant Sports Scholarships for 2022/23 is open to prospective students who will be attending LYIT for the first time in 2022/23. This is an exciting time to join LYIT as it transitions to become Atlantic Technological University (ATU) on 1 April this year along with partners GMIT and IT Sligo.  Applications will be open until 1 April and can be accessed via online link on LYIT website –  https://www.lyit.ie/Student-Life/Sports-Recreation/Sports-Scholarships.
