Self-help group being explored for ‘voice hearers’ of Donegal

Donegal Hearing Voices has launched a training event with the aim of forming a self-help group for people of Donegal.

The Hearing Voices Movement (HVM) was formed in 1988 after research carried out in the Netherlands by Dr. Marius Romme, Social Psychiatrist and Dr. Sandra Escher, a Science Journalist. The movement brought about a change in how we look at the experience of hearing voices.

The term ‘Hearing Voices’ includes all unusual experiences and perceptions such as visions, smell and tactile sensations.  The traditional approach to working with voice hearers focuses upon inabilities and deficits, rather than individuals’ inherent ability to understand and cope with their voices and other experiences.

Rather than seeing voices as a ‘symptom’ one needs to get rid of, it encourages voice hearers to look at underlying issues the voices might be pointing to and thus work with the voices rather than against them.

Who can attend?  This training is especially appropriate (Adults) for mental health providers across all disciplines, voices hearers (similar experiences) and their family members/peers. It is expected that participants will become part of the Hearing Voice group in Donegal supporting the facilitation of this Self-help Group. Some of the content of the narratives can be difficult to hear please try and identify someone you can speak to if required.

Training:  Participants will be taught to employ the Maastricht Interview, an assessment tool developed by Dr. Sandra Escher and Professor Marius Romme, which provides a structured method for understanding and working with a voice hearer’s experience. This training has been split into three days to maximize the learning potential. Attendance at ALL three sessions is required to complete the class.
