Successful weekend for Donegal athletes at National Juvenile Indoor Championships

Donegal athletes had a successful weekend at the National Juvenile Indoor Championships in Athlone.

On Day 1, a Championship best performance by Caoimhe McGonagle of Rosses AC saw her win the under-12 girls high jump, clearing 1.42m.

Cranford AC saw double gold in the boys 1500m as Oisin Kelly won the under-19 event while Caolan McFadden was the winner of the under-16s and the following day the two boys were top of the podium in their respective 800m races aswell.

Tori Murchan won the under-18 girls high jump as the Tir Chonaill AC athlete cleared 1.60m.

Riona Doherty claimed the gold in the under-16 girls 60m sprint. The Finn Valley woman finished in a time of 7.90 seconds.

Lifford-Strabane AC’s Caoimhe Gallen won under-16 girls shot put with a best of 12.36.

Tir Chonaill AC duo Lucy McGlynn and Alannah Anderson were second in the under-19 girls 400m and the under-15 girls shot put respectively while Fintan Dewhirst was third in the under-18 boys 400m.

Lucy was also presented with the New Marian Feehan Trophy for Best performance in Combined Events.

Finn Valley AC’s Mark Wilkinson won silver in the under-14 boys high jump with a best of 1.55m.

Two Donegal athletes medalled in the under-18 girls 60m as Sophie Parlour of Olympian YAC was second ahead of Lifford-Strabane AC’s Harriet McCrossan who finished third.

Letterkenny AC got their only medal of the day through Katie Elliott in the under-15 girls high jump with a best of 1.50m.

Lifford-Strabane saw more success as Kayla Russell was third in the under-14 long jump while Chloe Costello took also bronze in the under-16 girls triple jump.

On Day 2, Tir Chonaill had a 1-2 in the under-19 girls 60m hurdles with Lucy McGlynn winning ahead of teammate Niamh Moohan.

It was almost a similar scenario for Finn Valley in the under-16 girls 60m hurdles as Riona Doherty won gold while Amy Timoney was third, just behind Amy Rose Kelly of South Galway AC.

Ben Campbell of Tir Chonaill won bronze in the under-19 boys 60m hurdles and final Donegal medal from the 60m hurdles came for Rosses AC’s Oisin Gillespie who was third in the under-14 boys event.

Harriet McCrossan of Lifford-Strabane AC was first in the under-18 girls 200m with a time of 25.46.

Oisin Thompson picked up silver for Finn Valley in the under-19 boys long jump while club mate Daniel McHugh was 3rd in the under-18 boys long jump.

Dean Leeper saw bronze for Finn Valley in the under-16 shot put.

Mark Boyle Gildea won silver in the under-12 boys shot put and fellow Tir Chonaill athlete Eoin Boyle was 2nd in the under-17 boys high jump.

Lucy McGlynn rounded off her weekend with a third medal, this time in the under-19 girls 200m as she came third.
