Donegal volunteers were recognised for their work during the pandemic at an event held in Jackson’s Hotel, Ballybofey last Thursday evening.
The event was streamed live from Dublin Castle and was hosted by Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development, Joe O’Brien.
It highlighted the unique contribution and value of volunteers to their local communities.
Earlier this year, Minister O’Brien launched the Volunteer Ireland nomination web portal to accept nominations from community organisations of volunteers who went above and beyond to make sure no members of their community were left behind during the pandemic.
“Volunteers fulfil an extraordinary role. They show us that when times are hardest, the best of us show up, ready to help,” Minister O’Brien said.
Speaking to the Donegal volunteers, Leas-Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Councillor Martin McDermott said: “On behalf of the people of Donegal we are proud and honoured to have you among us and we thank you all. We are forever in your debt.”
