A Donegal County Councillor is calling for new measures to allow Ukrainian Nationals to qualify for the TÚS scheme.
The Tús initiative is a community work placement scheme providing short-term working opportunities for unemployed people.
Cllr Barry Sweeny said that allowing Ukrainian refugees in Ireland to qualify would help them integrate into day to day life in Donegal society. More participants on the scheme would also address staff shortages in local community groups, Cllr Sweeny told the council today.
“Refugees coming into Ireland are eligible to participate in community employment schemes, but not the Tús scheme. The key action here is to get people integrated into the community,” Cllr Sweeny said.
A motion was passed requesting that Donegal County Council write to Minister Heather Humphreys, Department of Social Protection, Rural and Community Development to request that recently arrived Ukrainian Nationals would qualify for the TÚS scheme.
