Mo Donegal, a horse whose owners have connections to Donegal, won the prestigious Belmont Stakes at the weekend.
The win for the 13/5 favourite won a cool $800,000 for the team, with the joint owners being the Donegal Racing Partnership.
Donegal Racing was founded in 2008 by Des Moines, Iowa native Jerry Crawford and nine other partners. Crawford’s family is originally from Donegal.
Their racing silk are green and yellow which Mo Donegal has worn in every race other than the Belmont Stakes where the blue and orange of the Repole Stable, the other co-owners silks.
It was a 1-2 fore the Repole Stable, owned by Mike Repole, and trainer Todd Pletcher.
Irad Ortiz Jr was the jockey on board the winner of the 1 mile 4 furlong race in Belmont Park in new York, where Mo Donegal came from the outside to take a convincing lead to beat Nest by three lengths.
