‘Heap of accidents’ at junction despite repeated calls for safety measures

Donegal Councillor John O’Donnell has hit out at the lack of action on a dangerous junction in Kilmacrennan.

Cllr O’Donnell says his calls for pedestrian safety measures at the four way junction in the village have gone answered for too long.

He told the Letterkenny-Milford MD meeting on Tuesday that there has been “a whole heap of accidents” in the area, and another last week. He said he had CCTV footage of a woman “nearly killed” while trying to cross the road.

“The speed of traffic going through Kilmacrennan is unbelievable,” Cllr O’Donnell said.

“You couldn’t put your nose out on the road, you’ll get it taken clean off you.”

Cllr O’Donnell said that his motion has been down “20 times at this stage” with no safety review that he knew of taking place.

“There is not one sign to warn you there is a busy junction ahead,” Cllr O’Donnell, saying that he has called for ‘SLOW’ warnings, flashing lights and road markings “50,000 times”.

Cllr O’Donnell’s motion this week specifically called for a pedestrian crossing and traffic lights at the junction as a matter of urgency.

“If it doesn’t happen shortly, I don’t want to be the person siting here saying I told you so,” Cllr O’Donnell said.

The matter is set to be passed on to the council Roads Safety Engineer for review.
