Denis Gallagher had his last day yesterday after a remarkable forty five years of service in Glenveagh National Park.
Denis started work at Glenveagh in 1977 when the Board of Works on behalf of the Irish State purchased the land for the National Park.
Starting out, Denis worked on the Fence Crew, who in those days maintained the twenty eight mile deer fence which enclosed the park.
His work also included Rhododendron control throughout the Park where Denis was a chainsaw operator.
In later years, Denis worked as the carpark attendant at the Visitor Centre where he met and greeted visitors with a smile and friendly word.
A presentation was made to Denis on Friday by his colleagues, while his family were also in attendance.
A spokesperson for Glenveagh National Park, on behalf of the staff, wished Denis and his wife Madge and their family a long, happy and healthy retirement.
