Surf is most certainly up in Bundoran this weekend.
The cream of Ireland’s surfers will descend on the Donegal seaside town for the annual Irish surf nationals championship which will take place at the Peak on Saturday and Sunday.
Rory Tuohy, Westport and Una Britton, Rossnowlagh were crowned Irish Men’s and Irish Women’s Surfing Champions when the event was last held in September 2019.
The event was cancelled, and no titles were awarded in 2020 and 2021 due to the CovId 19 Pandemic.
Surfers from all over Ireland are expected to attend the Championships to compete for titles in Surf Women & Men, Longboard Women & Men, Masters +35 Women & Men, Masters +50 Women & Men, SUP, Bodyboard and Kneeboard.
Among the competitors will be Irish Team members Gearoid McDaid, Iarom Madden, Tom Breen, Maia Monaghan, Una Britton and Holly Widger, all returning this week from the World Surfing Games at Huntington Beach, California.
Since the Irish National Surfing Championships was last held, a new generation of young competitive surfers have emerged.
Bundoran Tourism Officer Shane Smyth welcomed the return of the event.
He said “It’s really great to see the top Irish surfers in the country return to Ireland’s Surf Capital for this prestigious competition this weekend. We wish the competitors and organisers the best of luck with the event.’
