Man appears in Letterkenny court charged with rape

A young Donegal man has appeared in court charged with rape and sexual assault.

The man, who is in his 20s, was sent forward for trial at Central Criminal Court in Dublin.

He cannot be named for legal reasons.

He was served with a book of evidence after he appeared at Letterkenny District Court yesterday (Thursday).

He is charged with raping the woman at a named address in 2021 while he faces a further charge of sexually assaulting the same woman on the same date.

Garda Lynda Halligan gave evidence of serving the book of evidence on the accused at Letterkenny courthouse.

Sergeant Sean McDaid told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed that the man be sent forward to the present sitting of the Central Criminal Court.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham granted legal aid to the man’s solicitor, Mr John Fahy, for both a senior and junior counsel.
