Professor Declan McCole has received three prestigious awards from the University of California, Riverside.

Dr McCole is a leading doctor in biomedical sciences in the US who hails from Burtonport.

This week he has been selected for two Distinguished Service Awards from his Department in UCR.

The awards were in recognition of his outstanding service to the School of Medicine and to the School of Medicine University of California Systemwide activities.

Colleagues hailed Dr. McCole as providing outstanding service to the School of Medicine and a highly valuable member of the School of Medicine family.

“There is no one more worthy of being recognized for the Distinguished SOM UC Systemwide Service Award than Dr. Declan McCole,” said one endorser.

“Dr. McCole has been an important member of Clinical Affairs Advisory Group … he has been a persuasive advocate for UCR SOM … best exemplified by his continuous efforts to increase awareness of how the proposed UC policy regarding affiliating with partner hospitals that utilize ethical and religious directives, would affect the educational and community care missions of UCR SOM.”

And last week, Dr McCole was also selected by colleagues for the Outstanding Research Achievement Award in Biomedical or Basic Science Research. The award recognised Dr McCole’s work on chronic inflammatory disease.

The committee said: “Publications from his lab in the past year centered on the role of the inflammatory disease risk gene, PTPN2, in regulating intestinal barrier properties. Collectively, these publications represent significant advances to our understanding of how disease susceptibility mutations increase risk of developing chronic inflammatory conditions such as IBD, and how they can be therapeutically targeted by a personalized medicine approach.”

Dr McCole said he was honoured to receive the accolades and to celebrate with his father, who is visiting from Ireland this week. Dr McCole himself is a regular visitor home to his native Donegal.

Honored to have received the @UCRSoM Distinguished Service Award for service to the School of Medicine, and the Distinguished Service Award for service on behalf of @UCRSoM across the @UofCalifornia system. He received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology & Veterinary Medical research from University College Dublin, Ireland in 1997, for his work on host responses to infection with Fasciola hepatic.
