Planning permission has been granted for the conversion of an old mill into a river monitoring station.

Castlemont Developments Ltd have been given the green light for the extension and refurbishment of the existing derelict building at Meenlougher, Killygordon.

The proposed development will include the provision of office space at first floor level and storage at ground floor level.

It will also include the construction of a garage with canopy link to the existing building, formerly Taylor’s mill, and a second detached garage to accommodate boats, vehicles and equipment.

According to planning documents, foliage was cut back in recent years to reveal what remains of the old mill as well as part of a dry mill race.

The refurbished facility will be used to relocate an existing Loughs Agency river monitoring facility which is currently located on the edge of the River Finn in Killygordon.

“Funding has been secured for five additional staff posts which have been earmarked for Donegal, if suitable alternative premises can be located,” the application stated.

It added that, due to flooding, staff have to vacate the Killygordon facility and have identified the old mill near Liscooley as “ideal for their relocation.”

The refurbished office space will have enough room to accommodate six members of staff.
