‘Only a matter of time before road will have to close’ – Mayor warns over Meenaroy bridges

The Mayor of Letterkenny-Milford Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly has called for a strong funding application to be put forward for much-needed repairs on the bridges at Meenaroy.

The R250 road is the main artery to Letterkenny for traffic from Ardara, Glenties, Dungloe, Doochary and Fintown.

Several accidents have been reported on the road in recent years, while there are a number of bridges in a serious state of disrepair.

One bridge that is in danger of collapse is currently at the top of the MD’s priority list of projects.

Cllr Kelly has called on the council to ensure no stone is left unturned as funding is sought.

“If money is not secured it’s only a matter of time before this road has to be closed altogether,” Cllr Kelly told the council last week.

He warned that if a successful application is not submitted, the only other option would be to set up traffic lights on the road to make it a one-way system, which would cost ‘thousands’.

Cllr Kelly, speaking at last week’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford MD, asked the council to keep pressure on for the project ahead of the Specific Grants allocations announcement in the coming weeks.
