Funds of €4.5M have been allocated to improve 36 walking and cycling routes in Donegal in 2023.

Among the major Active Travel projects to take place this year are the Donegal Town One Way Scheme, the Fintown One Way scheme and the N15 Lifford Cycleway.

The largest allocation of €650,000 has been awarded to introduce a One-Way System in Donegal Town. (Full list of projects below).

National Transport Authority (NTA) has awarded investment to Donegal County Council for approximately 36 Active Travel projects in Donegal this year. This includes the development of segregated cycle lanes and widened footpaths, new walking and cycling bridges, and new pedestrian crossings.

Donegal Minister Charlie McConalogue welcomed the funding and said: “I am delighted to confirm funding right across County Donegal today for active travel. This will help to make our communities safer and more accessible.”

As a key part of this announcement, Active Travel funding will ensure that the Safe Routes to School programme will continue to provide for safer cycling and walking facilities for many more schools across the country. Construction is expected on dozens of front of school treatments throughout 2023.
