‘Message in a Bottle’ initiative banks award for local women

Two south west Donegal women have been recognised for their innovative life-saving initiative.

First responders, Mary Whelan and Catherine McNelis (pictured), last year developed and implemented the ‘Message in a Bottle’ project in the Glenties, Ardara and Portnoo (GAP) area.

They recently received a Volunteer Recognition Award from the Donegal Volunteer Centre for their efforts.

As part of the initiative, people of all ages record critical contact and medical information on a standard sheet, put it in a bottle and keep it in their fridge door.

This can then be used in a medical emergency such as when phoning an ambulance to ensure the medical personnel have all the important information they need to aid diagnosis and treatment.

The Eircode is also prominent on the form which helps an ambulance or First Responder find the location quickly.

Should you wish to obtain a bottle, please contact the MIAB Co-ordinator, Catherine, by calling or texting with your details to 085 734 7074.
