Darts: Gerard McGlynn wins his first ‘Con Sean’ title

Glenfin thrower Gerard McGlynn is the 2023 ‘Con Sean’ darts champion.

This is following a brilliant display of throwing, not just in the final but over the course of the day.

The county star (main pic, centre) defeated fellow county player Cartha Boyle in the final.

McGlynn saved his best darts for the final match, where he had 106 and 104 checkouts, a 13-dart leg and a 180 on his way to a 6-1 win.

This has been described as one of the best individual performances in the final in the history of the tournament.

Gerard also had the highest checkout of the day, with a 135 in the quarter final.

“We had 74 players registered to play on the day, which was the highest since we had 76 entries in 2007,” a spokesperson for the organisers said.

Beaten semi finalists were local thrower, Adrian Byrne, who had some notable wins on the way to the last four, and county veteran John Murray. John also had some big wins on his way to the last four and gave McGlynn a tough test in his semi. The event was held in Evelyn’s and Hegarty’s bars in Carrick, Glencolmcille.

The organisers thank both bars and to their sponsors, who included: Heineken Ireland, North West Aluminium, LMC Fire Safety, Kelly’s Kitchen, Top Nets, McLaughlin’s Bar (Dunkineely), John Kelly Painter, The McShane Family, Secure Storage Letterkenny and Carrick Butchers.

“Thanks to all who helped over the day from marking boards and helping with the draws and especially to Michael Curran for his help. Thanks to all who entered and continue to help make this one of the top events in the county.”
