Planners have given the green light for the redevelopment of the once-famous McGettigan’s butchers building in Donegal town.

The proposed development, by Fermanagh-based Carran Properties Ltd, will see the demolition of outbuildings to the rear of the property, on Séné Lane. This will make way for the erection of two retail units on the ground floor and four new one bedroom apartments on the first and second floors.

The butchers was famously visited by the then Prince Charles (below), and his wife Camilla, when they toured the county in 2016.

One of Donegal’s best-known businesses, it closed its doors in 2017 as a result of falling sales, more than half a century after it opened.

At the time, the shop employed seven people and was run by brothers Ernan and Diarmuid McGettigan, who took over from their father in 1980.
