Letterkenny construction worker banned for drug driving

March 12, 2023

A Letterkenny man whose slow driving roused the suspicion of Gardai has been put off the road for drug-driving.

Garda Declan O’Keefe was on patrol at Long Lane, Letterkenny at 9.05pm on August 17, 2021 when he saw a Volkswagen Passat being driven ‘extremely slowly’.

Garda O’Keefe spoke to the driver, Peter West, and formed the opinion that he was driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

West subsequently tested positive for the presence of cannabis.

West, a 25-year-old of Fairgreen Park, Letterkenny, appeared before Letterkenny District Court on charges of drug-driving and possession of a controlled drug.

In the course of interactions, Gardai also located cannabis to the value of €210 on West, who made full admissions and said it was for his own use.

Mr Rory O’Brien, solicitor for West, said his client, who works in construction, has since stepped away from cannabis use.

“It is a matter that has serious consequences for him,” Mr O’Brien said.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham convicted West of drug-driving. West was disqualified from driving for one year and fined €250.

For the possession of cannabis, West was fined €100.
