Heavy flooding has been reported in parts of Carrickfinn this Wednesday morning.
A deluge of water came in from the sea, covering the Rosses community sports field, which houses the Rosses Athletic Club track and the Tir Chonaill RFC rugby pitch.
High tides also caused flooding on Letterkenny’s four lane road at dawn this morning.
Local Councillor Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbiug said the issue in Carrickfinn is a cause for concern.
“The airport was lucky this time, due to their flood relief work, the water only came as far as their fencing.
“But I am getting reports from people in Anagaire who couldn’t get past road flooding there earlier.”
Following flood prevention works at the beach in Bhráid a number of years ago, there are fears that more work will be needed as water levels rise.
Cllr Mac Giolla Easbiug said he has highlighted today’s flooding with Donegal County Council’s flood relief team.
“We can’t afford to lose the rugby pitch and the track,” he said.
“There is too much to lose for this to be left alone, we have invested too much in this.
“Carrickfinn was once an island, and the people here are of the opinion that unless major works are done, it will return that way.”
