A historic piece of Donegal’s railway history has been donated to the Donegal Railway Heritage Centre.
The Drumboe nameplate is a history sign which the centre says if one of the most important it has received in recent years.
The centre was given the sign by Lord O’Neill who is a major supporter of the centre.
A spokesperson for the centre said “We have just received one of our most important artefact donations in recent years, with one of the original Drumboe nameplates making its way back to its original home, beside the Drumboe engine.
“Lord O’Neill has been an ongoing supporter of the Donegal Railway Museum, and in recent years we have struck up a closer working relationship. We were delighted and astonished when he mentioned that he had in his possession one of the original Drumboe nameplates, and wanted to donate it to the museum, particularly in recognition of the transformation in recent times.
“This is an important addition to our archives, which will take pride of place in the museum. We hope to have the nameplate available to see in the museum by mid-April.”
Separately, the centre has continued to receive other artefacts and important historic documents back to the museum.
They include early Donegal/Swilly railway advertising material from Michael Walsh, copies of 1950’s “The Railway Magazines” from Dr Liam Campbell, as well as unique Swilly correspondence from Sir McFarland which is currently being digitised.
