Eye-catching new mural promotes important message

Letterkenny’s Devlin Hall has been adorned with a colourful new mural.

The environmental-themed artwork was completed on the historic Lower Main Street building at the beginning of April.

The new mural is another step in the upgrade of Devlin Hall as it is being renovated as a venue for the Letterkenny Youth and Community Club.

The artwork is one of three murals included in a project led by Derry-based charity Children in Crossfire’s public engagement programme. Two more murals are being created in Buncrana and Bundoran.

The art was completed by Karl Porter of UV Arts – the artist behind the famous Derry Girls mural in Derry city.

Karl and his team have completed a number of other pieces in Letterkenny town centre, including the Flight of the Bees project across the town and a stained glass creation at the Cathedral Quarter.

The newest government-funded mural was inspired by the young members of the Donegal Youth Service BreakOut group. The image depicts the positive and negative impact that humans have on our environment. The destructive impact of industrialisation at the bottom is contrasted against young people caring for the planet above.

The inspirational artwork has been well-received by the youth of the town.

Paddy Delap and James Friel, co-founders of the Letterkenny Youth Club, said that young people have been posing for pictures are the building and analysing the images.

“We are very happy with the result,” James said. “It really enhances the building and the Lower Main Street.”

Extensive work is ongoing at Devlin Hall to create a safe and fun space for activities in the near future. With a new kitchen, toilets and lift to be installed, it is hoped that it can be ready to reopen by the end of the summer.

In the meantime, volunteers are being sought to help with the new era for the Letterkenny Youth and Community Club.

If you are interested in helping supervise, one night a week, please contact Paddy Delap on 0863859696 or 0863686618 .
