A major security operation is in place in Belfast today ahead of the arrival of US President Joe Biden.
The president is making a four-day visit to Northern Ireland and the Republic to mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.
The itinerary begins in Belfast, where President Biden will meet UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. On Wednesday, the President will make a key address at the new Ulster University campus in Belfast. He is also expected to meet the five main parties of the collapsed Stormont Executive.
The president’s visit comes two weeks after MI5 said the terrorism threat level in Northern Ireland had increased due to a rise in activity by dissident Republicans.
A Republican Easter march in Derry erupted in violence yesterday when police officers were attacked with petrol bombs.
A massive security operation is already underway before Air Force One touches down at Belfast International Airport this evening.
The President’s tour of the Republic will include visits to Louth, Dublin and Mayo.
