SHOP LK and Letterkenny Tidy Towns have launched a re-useable water bottle in a bid to reduce single use plastic.

The refillable bottle was unveiled last week at the launch of the Letterkenny Tidy Town’s Action Plan for 2023.

Speaking to the Donegal News, CEO of Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce, Toni Forester said launching the re-useable water bottles is a step forward in removing single use plastic products.

“At all times during the day we see lots of people walking and running, many with water bottles. Lots of people are using re-fillable bottles already so the idea was to encourage even more of their use. If this one small step removes some of those single use plastic bottles off the streets, then we have gained something,” she said.

Working alongside the organisation ‘Refill Ireland’, Toni said if you follow their ‘Tap Map’ online it will show you where you can get your bottle refilled for free in Letterkenny.

“So far in Letterkenny Magee’s Chemist, ATU Letterkenny, Insomnia Coffee and Tank & Skinny’s will refill your water bottle for free. We also hope this ShopLK braded bottle will encourage more businesses to get involved.”

Also speaking at the launch Fionnuala Rabbitt, Chamber President explained “It is all about sustainability and removing single use plastic from our ecosystem is an important move. Letterkenny Tidy Towns, Donegal County Council and the many volunteers we see out at the weekend work very hard in keeping Letterkenny clean.

“This partnership with Letterkenny Tidy Towns and ShopLK aims to keep the sustainability message at the forefront of people’s minds. The ShopLK brand promotes Letterkenny as a retail and leisure destination and so this bottle supports Letterkenny’s sustainability credentials and acknowledges our partnership with Letterkenny Tidy Towns and Donegal County Council,” she said.

Encouraging more businesses to offer the refill service she said “If you’re a business and are interested in getting involved then providing a refill service is a simple opportunity to contribute to your sustainable development.

“It is easily manageable, has measurable impact and encourages your community to be forward thinkers like you. It also creates potential for more footfall in your store, whilst showcasing your commitment to being environmentally conscious.”

If businesses want to provide a refill service they can visit www.refill.ie to register.

Keep your eyes peeled this Summer for the ShopLK refill bottles.
