A FILM based on a woman’s experience in direct provision will be screened at a free event in Letterkenny next week.
Amnesty International Ireland (Letterkenny group) and the Law Society, ATU, Letterkenny, will host a special screening of ‘Aisha’ at the ATU Letterkenny campus on Monday, 24th April at 5.30 pm.
Special guests include film director Frank Berry, Lucky Khambule and Keitumetse Gaonwe for a post-film discussion on lived experiences in Direct Provision.

Directed by Frank Berry, Aisha charts the experiences of a young Nigerian woman Aisha (Letitia Wright) as she seeks international protection in Ireland. Placed in Ireland’s direct provision system, she tries her best to eke out a living as she seeks asylum. In one accommodation centre, she befriends local security guard Conor (Josh O’Connor). But as the two grow closer, Aisha struggles with the increasing precariousness of her life in Ireland.
This excellent film from director Frank Berry (Michael Inside) is a probing look at Ireland’s direct provision system, drawing on the real-world experiences of asylum seekers. Angry and compassionate in equal measure, Aisha features two exceptional lead performances from Letitia Wright and Josh O’Connor.
Aisha won the Audience Award at the Cork International Film Festival in 2022.
The Irish Times described the film as ‘a portrait of unassailable dignity in the face of cruel happenstance’. Entertainment.ie reviewed the film as an ‘understated but powerful indictment of direct provision’. The Guardian reviewed it is ‘an absorbing drama given sympathy and life by two very high-calibre performers’.
