The man found guilty of the manslaughter of Jasmine McMonagle has had his sentencing adjourned.

Richard Burke (32) was to be sentenced at the Central Criminal Courts of Justice before Judge Paul Burns today.

However, he will now learn his fate on May 22nd.

Richard Burke.

Last month, a jury in the trial of Burke found him not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

The unanimous verdict was returned at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Monaghan.

Burke, with an address in Killygordon but originally from Donegal town, had pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter.

Ms McMonagle, a 28-year-old mother-of-two, was strangled and beaten in her Killygordon home in the early hours of January 4, 2019.

At the start of his sentence hearing today, the court heard victim impact statements from Jasmine’s mother, Jacqueline, and sister, Jenna.

The court also heard how Jasmine’s daughters are coping with life without their doting mother.

Mr Burke was said to have been ‘visibly upset’ during today’s hearing.
