Shoppers at The Cope Dungloe got a musical surprise this week when the Rosses Pop Choir made their outside debut!

Twenty-two singers gathered in the supermarket to sing some uplifting tunes and brighten everyone’s day.

The flashmob was led by choir Director Suzanne Wainwright, who set up the signing group just for fun. The idea led to the formation of the Rosses Pop Choir and with funding from the ETB via the CDP at Dungloe, they were supported for eight weeks of practice.

Suzanne was incredibly proud of the group’s performance in Dungloe on Wednesday. She said: “Shoppers wondered what the occasion was and we received a lovely round of applause at the end. I was so very proud and we are all new friends together. Thanks to Declan at The Cope and the very patient shoppers!”

The Rosses Choir is a judge-free collective for people who simply love to sing. Suzanne said: “There’s no such thing as ‘being tone deaf’ or ‘can’t sing’. Quite a few of the members were a bit shy but there’s a lovely thing that happens when you come together. There is safety in numbers and no-one is judging.”

A native of Leeds, Yorkshire, Suzanne got her music from her grandmother, who was Irish. She is a retired Music Teacher and Choral Leader, now living in Burtonport.

The aim of the choir is adults coming together with no sheet music, no audition, just to sing great songs and have fun.

Suzanne is keen to build links across the community, she said. “I also wanted to reach out to try engage with some local settlers. We have two Polish singers and would love our Ukrainian friends to come too.

“Going forward, I can manage up to 40 singers so there’s room for more members. I hope our pop choir will grow and blossom.

“I’d love to do a Big Beach Sing with 100 voices at Maghery! This summer we should be out and about during the Mary of Dungloe week. We’ll keep singing!”
