The long-awaited inquests into the Stardust fire tragedy begins today, Tuesday.
A fire in The Stardust nightclub in Dublin in 1981 claimed the lives of 48 people and seriously injured more than 200 more. The average age of those killed in the fire was 19. All of the dead were aged between 16 and 28. To this day, relatives and survivors are still waiting for answers about what happened.
In 2019 the Attorney General had granted new inquests into the deaths of the 48 victims of the St Valentine’s disco. The inquest was delayed by funding issues but in 2020, €8million was allocated for the hearing.
The victims’ families will meet today at 9.30am in the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin and plan to walk hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder in solidarity for justice on the opening day of the historic inquest.
