If you heard a loud rumbling sound at 1.30am last night, then you won’t be surprised to hear that Donegal was struck by a mini earthquake.

The quake struck near Glenveagh National Park and was felt across the Glendowan and Churchill area.

The Irish National Seismic Network has confirmed that the earthquake rumbled at a depth of 5km at 00:32 UTC on the 6th of May 2023.

“I thought my house was about to collapse in Glendowan,” one local resident told Donegal Daily. “I hope I was not the only one to sense it.”

Donegal has had its share of noticeable earthquakes in recent times. Two major fault zones stretch across the county, causing tremors from time to time.

Last night’s tremor is among some of the largest onshore earthquakes recorded recently by the INSN. A 2.5 magnitude quake occurred on the 26th of January 2012 on the Fanad Peninsula in Donegal.

Did you feel anything?

The event was recorded by seismic stations in the Irish National Seismic Network (INSN)
