The Letterkenny community embraced the 2023 Darkness Into Light appeal in their hundreds this morning.

An estimated 900 people, and some furry friends, gathered at 4am to walk the town and show their support for all those struggling and to remember loved ones.

The Letterkenny Darkness Into Light event marked its 10th year with an incredible turnout. Almost €24,000 has been raised through registration fees and community fundraising so far.

Darkness Into Light is a moment of hope and solidarity to those who may be in crisis or those that have lost loved ones to suicide. Each year, people unite in the fight against suicide and self harm and raise funds for Pieta.  In 2022 Pieta delivered over 50,000 hours of one-to-one therapy online and over 6500 unique clients in locations nationwide, answered almost 100,000 calls and texts to the 24/7 crisis helpline and supported close to 700 households bereaved by suicide. Over 30 % of Pieta’s annual funds are raised every year by people taking part and supporting Darkness Into Light.

Stephanie Manahan, CEO of Pieta said: “To everyone who got up early this morning to show their support for all those struggling and to remember loved ones – thank you. It was an incredible morning, filled with hope.

“We also want to say a big thank you to our committees, volunteers, and ambassadors who helped make this year’s event such a success. Our work doesn’t stop for DIL and our therapists are here if you need them – now and every day.”

Thirteen locations across Donegal hosted walks this year. If you would like to share photos from your local walk, please email them to info@donegaldaily.com.
