Concern over dangerous speeding on road opposite school

Donegal County Council has been asked to introduce more road safety measures to protect pupils of Lurgybrack National School.

The school is located on the N13, one of the busiest roads in Letterkenny leading to the Twin Towns and onwards to Donegal Town.

Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh says speeding on the Lurgybrack hill has created a dangerous situation for parents at drop-off and collection times. He raised the issue with the Letterkenny-Milford MD this week, commenting that the school has done all they can to make the area safer.

“Every year there’s a new batch of kids going to school and every year a new batch of parents and grandparents seeing how dangerous it is. There are 450 kids at the school, it’s a very busy school but the speed on the road is a very big issue,” Cllr Kavanagh told Tuesday’s meeting.

“Everything that can be done has been done, the drop-off system is managed very well, but edging back out onto that road is really dangerous.”

Cllr Kavanagh acknowledged that the TEN-T network will create a solution for the school, but the road project is years down the line. He asked the council to explore ways to improve signage and to possibly create a safe walkway and proper hard shoulder above the school.

The matter is set to be referred to Donegal County Council’s Road Safety Engineer for review
