Safety warning issued after 7,000 travel adaptors recalled

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has warned holidaymakers to be careful when using travel adaptors due to a number of products that failed testing.

The testing took place as part of a Europe-wide safety campaign and, so far, 7,600 travel adaptors have been recalled while 6,200 have been withdrawn from sale.

Among the products recalled was a travel adaptor sold in Harvey Norman branded G&BL Universal Multitravel Adapter as well as the Homesale Universal USB Travel Adaptor sold in various retail outlets.

The CCPC has warned of the risk of fire and electrocution associated with some adaptors and are advising holidaymakers to be cautious when plugging electrical products into adaptors.

The CCPC is encouraging all consumers to follow these tips when using a travel adaptor:

  1. Use only in the countries listed on the product, its packaging or accompanying safety information.
  2. Always plug the appliance into the travel adaptor first, before inserting the travel adaptor into the socket.
  3. Don’t overload the adaptor: it’s designed for short-term use only, with low energy consumption devices, not as a replacement for a domestic socket.
  4. Unplug the adaptor when you’re finished using it, when you’re leaving the house or your accommodation, and when you’re going to sleep.
