A team of Ukrainian women have been inspired to step up to support Relay for Life in Donegal next weekend.
Members of the group attended last week’s Team Captains’ information evening and decided there and then to participate in the annual event which goes ahead on June 3rd to the 4th.
One of the group, Ada Klochko, said they were very keen to support the cause.
“I have a niece who was diagnosed with cancer and we would all know people who have had it.”
A native of Kharkov, the second largest city and municipality in Ukraine and located in the north east of the country, Ada has been living in Letterkenny for the past year.
“We have got a lot of information on Relay for Life at this meeting and we wanted to do something to help. So we are getting a team together,” she added.
The group was escorted to the meeting by Rotary Club members, Ed Wickes and Paddy Delap.
Relay chairperson, Robert O’Connor, who had earlier welcomed the Ukrainian group to the Team Captains’ information evening, said afterwards: “We were delighted that they came along and even more so now that they have decided to enter a team for this year’s event.”
Meanwhile, the organisers of Relay for Life Donegal, which has been running since 2012, have called for volunteers to help out over the weekend of the event.
“We are lost without volunteers,’ insisted committee member, Seamus Devine.
They would be required to come along and help with pitch stewarding at the Letterkenny A.T.U. campus along with site set-up, operating the information tent, and site clearing at the conclusion of the event among other voluntary work.
“We are pleading with people to contact us and to get involved on the Saturday and Sunday of the Relay,” added Mr Devine.
