There is widespread concern after two Endocrinoligists tendered their resignation at Letterkenny University Hospital in recent days.

The issue is to be raised at today’s Regional Health Forum meeting by Councillor Gerry McMonagle, chairperson of the forum.

He said the resignaitons have caused widespread concern amongst the diabetic patients in the Donegal.

He added “Aware of challenges in the recruitment processes for endocrinologists across the country, diabetes patients in Donegal are extremely concerned about the latest revelations emanating from LUH that two Endocrinologist’s have left their Posts at the Hospital.

“Patients are very concerned that the impact of this will have on the care being provided to adults with diabetes in Donegal. As well as the unforeseen disruptions this will cause to the delivery and access to care for people living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes throughout the county.

“According to clinical guidelines an adult with diabetes should have a diabetes appointment every six months but LUH has struggled for some years to get the waiting times for diabetes appointments down from 24 months. The resignation of these two Endocrinologist will undoubtably extend these waiting times.”

Councillor McMonagle said it will also mean that the minimum care provision will not be provided and these unfilled posts will greatly affect the clinical governance and safety of those living with diabetes in the area.

He added “I will be contacting the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly TD to raise the concerns of Diabetic Patients in Donegal and demand of him that he make resources available to provide adequate Care at LUH for Donegal Diabetic Patients without further delay.

“The situation at LUH is unacceptable, it is failing to meet the needs of the people of Donegal and of Staff. This must end and Minister Donnelly must take a handle on whats going on at the Hospital.”
