Parish Priest of Gaoth Dobhair, Fr Brian O Fearragh has said the local community is numb and in shock at the death of a 43-year-old man in an unexplained explosion locally yesterday.

Stephen Montgomery, a construction worker from Dunfangahy, died while working on a house at Bloody Forelands.

Fr O Fearragh was called to give the last rites to Mr Montgomery who passed away at the scene.

The well-known local priest said “I was called there and I said my prayers and I administered the last rites as best I could.

“The emergency services and an Garda Siochana arrived then and I obviously stood back at that stage and let them do their work.”

Fr O Fearraigh spoke of the feeling in the community following such a tragic and sudden death.

He added “The feeling in our local community here is one of numbness and shock as news continues to trickle through of the tragedy that occurred, the untimely death of a construction worker in our community.

“There is a sense of sadness and sorrow and our hearts go out to this gentleman’s family and his colleagues and workmates and his community as well and his extended family. We offer our deepest sympathies and our heartfelt condolences to all of them.”

Meanwhile, the investigation into Mr Mongomery’s tragic death os set to continue today.

His remains were taken from the scene last night to Letterkenny University Hospital where a post mortem is expected to be carried out later today.
