A Donegal native has been recognised with one of the most prestigious UK engineering awards.

Jim Mackey, originally from Ramelton, was this week presented with the famous Skempton Medal for his exceptional contributions to geotechnical engineering.

Awarded by the British Geotechnical Association (BGA), it is presented to members who have demonstrated outstanding achievements over a sustained period.

It is only awarded to up to four individuals per decade, underscoring the exceptional nature of the honour. Jim Mackey’s inclusion in this esteemed group further solidifies his stature as one of the foremost geotechnical specialists of his generation.

Mr Mackey was made famous earlier this year when he appeared on television screens for a BBC documentary on the new five-storey basement extension to the exclusive Claridge’s hotel in London.

His remarkable career, spanning several decades, has showcased his unwavering commitment to advancing the practice of geotechnical engineering. His relentless pursuit of excellence and innovative technical solutions have left an indelible mark on the field.

The Skempton Medal, named in honour of the renowned British civil engineer and soil mechanics specialist Professor Alec Westley Skempton, is regarded as one of the highest accolades in geotechnical engineering. The medal is awarded to individuals who have yet to previously receive comparable recognition in the country, further highlighting the exceptional achievements of the recipient.

Mr Mackey, an advisor to UK engineering specialists, McGee Group.

Speaking on the award, Seb Fossey, Managing Director at McGee, commended him for his outstanding contributions to geotechnical engineering.

“Jim’s dedication and exceptional work in the field has truly elevated the practice of geotechnical engineering in not just London but the UK,” Mr Fossey said.

“ His invaluable contributions have impacted the profession, inspiring countless engineers to strive for excellence. We’re incredibly proud to have the depth of experience and independently recognised technical skill set in our business. The Skempton Medal is a fitting recognition of his remarkable achievements.”
