A teenage boy has died and a woman has been seriously injured in a head-on collision on the M8 motorway in Cork this morning.
The collision happened at Ballybeg at around 1am between Junctions 12 and 13, near Mitchelstown, on the northbound carriageway of the motorway.
The teenager, who was 16-years-old and from the south side of Cork city, was a passenger in one of the cars.
The car had been reported stolen to gardaí earlier this week and had been travelling in the wrong direction on the motorway when the collision occurred.
Four other teenagers who were in the same car were injured and taken to Cork University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the other vehicle, a woman in her 30s, was also taken to the CUH where she is being treated for serious injuries.
The incident has been referred by gardaí to the Garda Siochána Ombudsman Commission, as gardaí say the car in which the teenagers were travelling had an interaction with them prior to the collision.
They have appealed to witnesses to contact them, particularly motorists who may have dash-cam footage.
