Gardaí have issued a new public appeal as a major search for a missing person continues into its seventh day in South Donegal.
Investigations continue into an alleged assault which is believed to have taken place in the Slieve League/Killybegs area between Saturday and Sunday last.
It’s been confirmed that all areas of the Slieve League cliffs have been fully reopened to the public as of today. Parts of the popular tourist area had been sealed off to visitors during this week’s search.
There has still been no confirmation as to the identity of the missing person. Reports suggest Gardai are searching for a man from Northern Ireland, aged in his 60s, who was believed to have been seriously assaulted.
Two people, a man in his 30s and a woman in her 20s, were arrested on Monday last but released without charge on Tuesday evening.
It is understood that splatters of blood were present in a car owned by the male suspect in the case and samples have been taken for analysis. Forensics officers also sealed off a house in the Killybegs area and also searched that premises as part of their investigation.
A garda spokesperson said: “This Garda investigation remains ongoing and an incident room has been established at Ballyshannon Garda station under the direction of a Senior Investigating Officer.
“Investigating Gardaí are appealing to any persons travelling in the vicinity of Killybegs/Slieve League between the afternoon of Saturday 24th June 2023 and the evening of Sunday 25th June 2023 who observed any activity which drew their attention to come forward.
“Any road users travelling in these areas at these times who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Ballyshannon Garda Station on 071 985 8530, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”
