Rough and tumble of American Football returns to the north west

The Donegal Derry Vipers first youth team training session was hailed a great success this weekend.

The training at the Vale Centre, Greysteel on Saturday welcomed players from across the North West, from Letterkenny, Buncrana, Eglinton and across Derry. It’s open to anyone aged 15-18 (Boys and Girls).

“We had a good turnout with 15 players padding up, but there is always room for more as the squad size can be as big as 40 and we want to build a force to be reckoned with this year at Youth Level for the Vipers, and with the talent on display yesterday we will not be too far away if we can add a bit of depth to the squad,” explained Vipers Youth Head Coach Niall Lyons

“All you’ll need for your first session is water, gumshield and some boots. We will supply the rest, no experience is required in the sport, we will teach you everything!”

American Football has been growing from strength to strength in Ireland over the last decade and the Vipers already have an established senior kitted team (full contact football) and a flag football team (non Contact football). Niall’s plan is to build on the youth teams previous season in the league last year by adding to their ranks and pushing on to become even more competitive this year.

“Last year we were delighted to make the play offs and compete against the top youth players and teams across Ireland” said Niall.

“It’s an all-Ireland league with opportunities to play teams across the country. There is also a path towards the Ireland team. We have currently 5 of our youth players training with the Ireland U19 squad who will be playing an American High School in Dalymount Stadium in Dublin in September. The opportunities this sport offers are unrivalled!”

“We have a fantastic bunch of players from Donegal and Derry, who are now hooked on the sport and are keen to welcome new mates to our squad. American Football has a position for everyone and we really want to encourage you or your child to come out to a training session and experience it for yourself.”

The Vipers have an extremely hard working committee focused on promoting and growing the sport of American Football across Donegal and Derry.

Chairperson Mark Gillen would like to invite anyone who would like to join the club as a player or volunteer to reach out to them by one of the links above. The team is always looking to grow and provide sport and opportunities for the community.
