Here, Studio Manager at Fit20 Letterkenny, Daf Green (pictured above) tells us how a fitness programme can be tailored to golfers.

Golf is a physically demanding sport and many golfers suffer a great deal of pain after playing a round of Golf or play on painkillers.

The most common injuries for Golfers are:

– Hand, wrist, and elbow injuries, such as sprains, tendonitis, fractures, or blood vessel damage, caused by poor technique, overuse, or hitting the ground by accident.

– Back injuries or pain, such as muscle strains, disc problems, or spinal fractures, aggravated by hunching over the ball, swinging, or carrying the golf bag.

– Shoulder injuries, such as rotator cuff tears, impingement, or bursitis, resulting from repetitive stress, overuse, or improper swing mechanics.

– Knee injuries or pain, such as meniscus tears, ligament sprains, or arthritis, due to twisting, pivoting, or walking on uneven terrain.

– Foot and ankle injuries, such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, or ankle sprains, caused by walking, standing, or losing balance during the swing.

– Hip injuries, such as bursitis, labral tears, or arthritis, related to the rotational forces and weight transfer during the swing

Golf is a sport that requires skill, precision, and mental focus. But it also demands physical strength, power, and endurance. Many golfers overlook the importance of strength training for improving their game and preventing injuries.

In this article, I will explain why strength training is essential for golfers and how to design a simple and effective program.

Benefits of Strength Training for Golfers

According to research, strength training can provide the following benefits for golfers:

– Get more distance on their drives and iron shots. Strength training can increase the explosive and maximal strength of the muscles involved in the golf swing, which translates to higher swing speed, ball speed, and driving distance.

– Develop a faster, stronger, and more explosive swing. Strength training can improve the neuromuscular synchronization of the muscles engaged in the golf swing, which means better coordination, timing, and efficiency.

– Improve performance on the green, distance control, and accuracy. Strength training can enhance the stability and mobility of the core, hips, shoulders, and wrists, which are crucial for putting and chipping.

– Maintain and improve flexibility. Strength training can help prevent muscle imbalances and tightness that can limit the range of motion and cause compensations in the golf swing. It can also improve joint health and elasticity.

– Reduce the chance of golf-related injuries. Strength training can strengthen the bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles that are prone to stress and damage from the repetitive nature of golf. It can also help correct posture and alignment issues that can lead to pain and inflammation.

The Fit20 Program has been proven to increase strength at any age in only 20 minutes per week.

Average Gains are between 30-50% in the first year – this is a link to a Washington Post Article which reported the results – https://www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/interactive/2023/strength-training-gym-workout/
