Athletics: Rosses AC perform strongly at County 10k Championships

Last weekend saw the Newmills 10k double also as the county 10k road championship race with Rosses AC again to the fore with big numbers participating and some super performances.

The race was won by the consistent Declan Ferry who had a real battle holding off LAC’s Marc Wallace in a time of 32:54.

Shane O Donnell battled his clubmate Gary Scully finishing in a superb 34:06 for 4th, 5 seconds faster than the flying Gary 34:11 racing his 3rd race in 3 days not only did he take the M40 crown and county gold but these 3 combined to bring Rosses the senior team gold. Patrick Trimble finished 3rd M50 in a time of 36:34 with Keith O’ Connell returning from injury in 39:48.

Next Rosses man back was Denis Bonner in 42:59 with Brendan McBride 44:24 and combined with Patrick and Denis brought home a silver in their category as well in the team event.

In the ladies section Martina Mulhern was the first of our ladies to finish in a time of 42:31 which saw her take county silver in the F40 category. She was followed by one of our new members Selina O Donnell who worked hard to break 45 mins in a sharp time of 44:42. Emer Magee was the next in 48:11, Emer not only took F50 gold but the times of Martina, Selina and Emer combined to take home a team gold as well for the club – super work Ladies. Rosie Lynch was our next lady back dipping under 50 mins in a great time 49:15 alongside Sarah Mulholland who also had a good days work, running a solid time of 49:19, not far behind was Karen Deveney running strong and crossing the line in another fine time of 52:56. In the Glengad 5k Gary Scully went for his second race in two days and came away with a win on a hilly course in 17:40.

On Friday evening last the popular Rathmullan festival 5k saw Declan Ferry win a great contest against City of Derry’s Sean Melarkey winning in a super impressive 15:17. Next Rosses man back and first M40 was Charlie O Donnell in 15:49. Shane O Donnell finished fifth overall in 16:08 and second M40 on the night Gary Scully ran 16:12.Mark Ward ran 17:00, Paul McKelvey 17:12, Patrick Trimble 17:15, Declan Gallagher 17:33, Ken Bates 18:28 and Brendan McBride 19:40. In the ladies race Claire O Donnell ran a great 18:45 with Bernie Boyle 19:29 and Cathy Breslin 22:21.

This weekend sees the conclusion of the All Ireland Juvenile Track and Field Championships for the u14 to u19s where the club has a number athletes competing and club good wishes to them all.
