Householders have been warned to stop using certain gas hobs due a safety issue.
In a statement, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) said an issue was identified with the elbow joint on the connecting pipework of certain models of Belling, Cooke and Lewis and Caple gas hobs manufactured since 2019.
It said the elbow joint from the hob to the gas supply may fracture and cause a gas leak.
The CCPC said the issue is a health risk and could cause burns, fire, explosion and poisoning from inhalation.It said affected consumers should stop using the gas hob immediately.
The UK has also issued a safety report into other brands that were sold in Britain.
The CCPC added that Irish consumers who have a Cata/Culina or a Electriq gas hob should also stop using it immediately and contact them.
The commission said it is also liaising with Cata/Culina and Electriq to establish if any of their affected gas hobs were sold in Ireland.
CCPC member Pat Kenny said: “Gas leaks are extremely serious and can cause poisoning, explosions or fire, leading to life changing injuries and even death.
“The fault identified affects several different types and brands of gas hobs. The CCPC is engaging with the manufacturers, brand owners and retailers of these gas hobs to ensure that consumers are alerted to these safety risks as a matter of urgency. It is essential that the affected gas hobs are identified and the safety issues fixed as soon as possible.
“The CCPC continues to engage with manufacturers to ensure that they address the risks from any affected hobs and will provide further updates.”
It also reminded consumers that if they smell gas they should turn off their gas supply at the meter and contact Gas Networks Ireland immediately on 1800 20 50 50.
