Rowing from Arranmore to Gweedore in aid of Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust

Members of a local currach club are to row from Arranmore to Gweedore next month in aid of a very worthy charity.

Established in 2007, Cumann na gCurach in Gaoth Dobhair has long supported numerous charities in its annual sponsored row.

This year, club members will undertake a longer than usual route in aid of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust (KBRT).

The trust aims to alleviate the financial hardship of bereaved families repatriating the bodies of loved ones who have died abroad in sudden or tragic circumstances back to Ireland.

On Sunday the 6th of August, a small fleet of currachs will depart Arranmore island at 2pm destined for Magheragallon, a trip of approximately 19 kilometres.

“Charity rows cannot operate without support and each year a small group of local enthusiasts offer welcome assistance to rowers,” a spokesperson for the club said.

“This year is no exception where crews will once again be supported by local seafaring altruists who will guide and ensure the safety of rowers.”

The crews and support boats are estimated to arrive at Magheragallon at 4pm.

“It would be a very welcome sight to see as many well-wishers as possible on the pier to provide some encouragement for those undertaking the charity event.”

The club is encouraged by the donations received to date and is hoping to surpass its target in

supporting a charity that is so close to the hearts of many. Donations will be accepted on the new pier (Cé Úr) on the day and are also being accepted on the club’s Facebook page.

The organisers stressed that 100% of the proceeds will be transferred directly to the KBRT.
