Senator calls for Ardara to be national pilot for new LGFA kits

Independent Senator Eileen Flynn said she would like to see Ardara considered as a pilot programme to fund the purchase of dark-coloured shorts for LGFA girls and women.

This follows high-profile concerns worldwide over light-coloured shorts while players are on their periods.

Senator Flynn said she would like to see the Minister for Sport develop a pilot programme in Ardara to purchase dark-coloured shorts for all LGFA women and girls teams looking to change their kit.

“I think the choice should be there and the funding should be there to facilitate that choice,” the South West Donegal-based Senator said.

“I live in Ardara and I am aware our LGFA women and girls have already been working toward making this change to their kit. I call on the Minister for Sport to fund this pilot programme, which could then be rolled out across the country for all our female clubs looking to make that change. Our LGFA women and girls deserve our support, and I believe this scheme would be another strong step to show our support for them.”

Senator Flynn said Minister Thomas Byrne has accepted an invitation to come to Ardara.

“We look forward to his visit and to talk to him further about gender equality in Gaelic sports,” she said.

Senator Flynn recently hosted the Ardara Minor Ladies team at Leinster House.

“I was so impressed by these young women and their passion about equality of opportunities for women who play Gaelic football.

“I think while the sports capital and equipment scheme is a good one, we’re not doing enough for our women and girls. We’re not stretching far enough.”

The senator said women’s and girls’ sports are already at a disadvantage to their male counterparts in terms of resources.
